3-4 Artists will be exploring how to communicate ideas in both representational and non-representational forms through the use of 3-D shapes; neutral, intermediate, monochromatic, and complementary colors; contrast through bright colors vs. neutral colors and dark vs. light values; physical and implied textures; regular, irregular, and random patterns and rhythms; radial and asymmetrical balance; unity through color, shape, and texture; and the organization of elements. We will be critiquing art from throughout history and the world by describing, analyzing, interpreting, and comparing and contrasting artists and cultures by examining work by Rodrigue, Arcimboldo, O’Keeffe, and Monet among others. Some artistic challenges we may embark on are surreal animal portraits, radial name mandalas, value scale emotional paintings, and clay soul shakers.
